Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there. They work by replacing the roots of the missing teeth, allowing for various benefits, like additional stability, comfort, and longevity. To achieve this, patients need to undergo a multistep process that takes place over the course of several months. This includes a surgical procedure. Continue reading to learn more about the dental implant process and how long you can expect your surgery to take.
How Long Does Dental Implant Surgery Take?
Your dental implant placement procedure will begin with your dentist numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Sedation options are also available to help you feel even more comfortable. Then, an incision is made in the gum tissue so the dental implants can be precisely and strategically placed into the jawbone at just the right angle. Lastly, the gums are closed and protective caps are placed over the end of the implants to keep them safe as the area heals.
The whole surgical process usually takes between one and two hours for one dental implant. If you need more than one implant, the procedure will be longer. During your consultation, your dentist will be able to give you a more specific estimate for your unique case so you can plan accordingly.
How Long Is the Recovery Period for Dental Implants
Once your surgery is complete, you can head home to begin the recovery period. This can take anywhere from three to six months. At this point, the titanium implants are fusing to the jawbone in a process called “osseointegration.” This is what makes the implants so success and long-lasting.
Swelling and discomfort are normal for the first few days after your surgery. This can be managed with your over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers. This should subside over the next few weeks. You should also take plenty of steps to keep the area clean and avoid any foods that could aggravate the surgical site. The entire fusion process can take anywhere from three to six months.
Finishing the Dental Implant Process
Once your dental implants have fused to the jawbone, you need to undergo another minor procedure. This is when your dentist will attach abutments to the end of your implants. Impressions are also taken so your new restoration can be customized at the dental lab. Once they are ready, you can return to the dental practice. Your dentist will secure your replacement teeth to your implants via the abutments. If everything looks and feels great, you will be free to show off your new and improved smile!
Getting dental implants doesn’t happen overnight, but it is certainly worth the wait!
